If you received an assessment notice from the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR), it means the Department has determined that additional tax, penalty, interest, or other amounts may be due.
Your notice explains:
- Why the notice was issued
- The tax type and tax period involved
- The amount due (if applicable)
- Any response deadline
- Your options for resolving the matter

Step 3 — If Your Return Was Professionally Prepared
If the return referenced in your notice was prepared by a CPA, attorney, enrolled agent, or other tax professional, contact your preparer before contacting LDR.
Your preparer may be able to:
- Explain why you received the notice.
- Review your return for accuracy.
- Determine whether corrections are needed.
- Respond to LDR on your behalf, if authorized.
- Help resolve the issue more quickly.
If you prepared the return yourself, or your preparer cannot resolve the issue, LDR is available to assist you.
Note: A valid Power of Attorney or other authorization may be required before LDR can discuss confidential tax information with your representative.

Assessment notices generally fall into one of the following categories.
Notice of Proposed Assessment
What It Means
LDR has proposed additional tax, penalty, interest, or other amounts due.
This notice provides you with an opportunity to review the proposed assessment and respond before it becomes final.
What You Should Do
- Review the notice carefully.
- Compare the information with your records.
- Contact your tax preparer if they prepared the return.
- Follow the instructions provided in the notice.
- Respond by the deadline shown.

What It Means
LDR has issued an assessment establishing the amount currently due on your account.
What You Should Do
You may:
- Pay your balance in full.
- Request a payment plan if eligible.
- Review the assessment if you believe it is incorrect.

Notice of Final Assessment
What It Means
The assessment has become final under Louisiana law.
If the liability is not resolved, LDR may begin collection actions authorized by law.
